Gopalasamudram Narayana Ramachandran (G. N. Ramachandran) was born on October 8, 1922 in Gopalasamudram, Tirunelveli district, the eldest son of GR Narayanan and Lakshmi Ammal. Educated in Ernakulam, his father Narayanan worked as a Professor of Mathematics in a college in Ernakulam. Studied Physics (Honors) at St. Joseph College, Trichy. He later joined the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore as a research student of Sir.C.V. Raman, who studied under Rama's supervision, received his doctorate. Sir William Lawrence joined the Bragg Laboratory at the University of Cambridge. After completing his studies there, he joined the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore as an Assistant Professor.
Ilatsumanasamy Mudaliar, who was then the Vice Chancellor of the University of Chennai, brought Ramachandran and in 1952 made him Professor of Physics at the University of Chennai. Under this department Ramachandran established a new field of crystallography and biophysics with leading research facilities. Ramachandran was 29 years old when he took charge as a professor at the University of Chennai. He discovered how the cell is made of halogen, a protein substance produced in the human body. The study of radiation was carried out in a physical manner. This time it is called Ramachandran Code.
Revealed the fact that the molecules in halogen are in a triangular configuration. He is credited with the invention of the Ramachandran diagram, which helps to understand the structure of embryonic proteins (peptides). He was nominated for the Nobel Prize. His discovery helped to understand the three-dimensional structure of muscle protein, which is the basis for the design of proteins.
Despite being a great scientist,
his speeches, using very simple words and illustrations, were understandable
even to school children. He was an excellent teacher. In 1977 he was awarded
the Fellow of the Royal Society Award in London. He received the 'Evolve' Award
for his work in the field of crystallography. He has received many awards such
as Meghnad Award, Patnagar Award, Whatmool Memorial. Narayana Ramachandran, one
of the foremost twentieth century Indian scientists, passed away on April 7,
2001 in Chennai at the age of 78.
