Today (December 29, 1766) is the birthday of Charles Macintosh, famous for his invention of waterproof fabric.
Charles Macintosh was born on December 29, 1766, in Glasgow, Scotland. Although he was a clerk, he was sometimes interested in science and chemistry. He also resigned from his clerical post before the age of 20 to pursue chemical production. In this, he was very successful and invented various new processes. He thus quit his job and undertook several scientific experiments. Many of these were successful. His experiments with naphtha led to the invention of waterproof fabric. He became famous for his invention of waterproof fabric.
The essence of his patent is to cement two thick cloths together with natural rubber. Rubber becomes soluble by the action of naphtha. Naphtha was produced by distilling coal tar. Bonnington Chemical Works was a major supplier. Macintosh married Mary Fisher in 1790, the daughter of Alexander Fisher, a Glasgow merchant. In 1823, he was elected a member of the Royal Society for his chemical discoveries. In 1828, he became an ally of James Beaumont Nielsen. He used the patent for the hot blast of blast furnaces. This saved them significantly on fuel consumption.
Charles Macintosh, best known for his invention of waterproof fabric, passed away on July 25, 1843, in Dunedin, Scotland, at the age of 76. He died in 1843 and was buried in Glasgow Cathedral Cemetery. His name is included in the 17th-century monument that stands against the eastern border wall. The second-century monument in the late 19th century, in polished red granite, is slight to the north, where Charles is again mentioned in the tomb of his son George. To commemorate his birthday, Google released a Doodle on Thursday, December 29, 2016.
