Today (April 8, 1992) is the Memorial Day of Daniel Bovet, winner of the Nobel Prize in Medicine for his discovery of drugs to block the action of neurotransmitters.
Daniel Bovet was born in Switzerland on March 23, 1907, and emigrated to
Italy. He graduated from the University of Geneva in 1927. He then received his
doctorate in 1929. In 1937, antihistamines were discovered. It is also used as
an antihistamine in the neutrophil transmitter and in allergy medicine. His
research also included chemotherapy, sulfa drugs, and the sympathetic nervous
system. Recipient of the 1957 Nobel Prize in Medicine for his discovery of
drugs that block the action of neurotransmitters.
In 1965 he presented a study by his research team on the growing
intelligence of smokers. From 1929 to 1947 he worked at the Pasteur Institute
in Paris. From 1947 he worked at the National Institutes of Health in Rome. In
1964, Safari became a professor at the university. He served on the National
Research Council of Rome from 1969 to 1971 and then on the University of
Sapienza in Rome until 1982 when he retired. Daniel Bovet, the recipient of the
Nobel Prize in Medicine, passed away on April 08, 1992, at the age of 85 in Rome,
Italy.
