Today (January 2, 1940) is the birthday of Padma Bhushan SR Srinivasa Varadhan, the outstanding mathematical genius who won the National Medal of Science, the highest medal in the United States.
Sathamangalam Ranga Iyengar
Srinivasa Varadhan was born on January 2, 1940 in Chennai. He studied at
Ponneri Board High School, 30 km from Chennai. His father Arang Iyengar was the
headmaster of the same school. He received his Special (Honors) degree from the
University of Chennai in 1959 and his Master of Arts (M.A.) the following year.
He then studied at the Indian Institute of Statistics, Kolkata, under the
leadership of renowned statistician C.R. Rao, and obtained his doctorate in
1963. From 1963 to 1966 he served as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Corundum
Institute of Mathematics. In 1966 he became an adjunct professor there. In 1968
he became an associate professor. He is a professor of mathematics
at the Courant Institute of Mathematics in New York.
He became a full-time professor
in 1972, and served as director of the academy from 1980 to 1984 and again from
1992 to 1994. His wife Vasundhara Varadhan is a professor at New York

Mittag-Leffler Institute (1972), Birkoff Prize of the American Mathematical
Society (1994), Margaret-Erman Sokol Award, University of New York Arts and
Science (1995) ), Mary Curie University, Paris, in 2003 (2003), Kolkata Indian
Institute of Statistics (2004), American National Medal of Science (2010),
Infosys Prize (2013), Abel Prize
The Norwegian Academy of Sciences
has been presenting the Abel Prize in memory of Abel, Norway's 19th-century
19th-century mathematician and world mathematician. The prize is worth $
875,000 today. In 2007 Abel Prize was awarded to SrinivasaVaradhan for his
contributions to the theory of probability, and especially to his work on the
Theory of Large Deviations. He also received the Padma Bhushan award in 2008.
In 2010, Barack Obama presented him with the National Science Medal, the
highest medal in the United States. He also won the Infosys Prize for 2013.
