Sathamangalam Ranga Iyengar Srinivasa Varadhan was born on January 2, 1940 in Chennai. He studied at Ponneri Board High School, 30 km from Chennai. His father Arang Iyengar was the headmaster of the same school. He received his Special (Honors) degree from the University of Chennai in 1959 and his Master of Arts (M.A.) the following year. He then studied at the Indian Institute of Statistics, Kolkata, under the leadership of renowned statistician C.R. Rao, and obtained his doctorate in 1963. From 1963 to 1966 he served as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Corundum Institute of Mathematics. In 1966 he became an adjunct professor there. In 1968 he became an associate professor. He is a professor of mathematics at the Courant Institute of Mathematics in New York.

 

He became a full-time professor in 1972, and served as director of the academy from 1980 to 1984 and again from 1992 to 1994. His wife Vasundhara Varadhan is a professor at New York University. The Norwegian Academy of Sciences has been presenting the Abel Prize in memory of Abel, Norway's 19th-century 19th-century mathematician and world mathematician. The prize is worth $ 875,000 today. In 2007 Abel Prize was awarded to SrinivasaVaradhan for his contributions to the theory of probability, and especially to his work on the Theory of Large Deviations. He also received the Padma Bhushan award in 2008. In 2010, Barack Obama presented him with the National Science Medal, the highest medal in the United States. He also won the Infosys Prize for 2013.
