Today (January 26, 1891) is the Memorial Day of Nikolaus Otto, who is the first four-stroke internal combustion engine that was developed.
Nikolaus Otto was born on June
10, 1832, in Halsson, Germany. His father died when he was a child. He was a
gifted student in his studies and others. However, due to the economic
downturn, even high school education could not be completed. Before the age of
sixteen, he worked in a grocery store to gain business experience.
Shortly afterwards he joined an office in Frankfurt as a clerk. He then worked
for a travel agency. It was at this time that Etienne Lenwar heard about the
first internal engine to be invented. There was interest and initiative in
learning more about it and doing research. He seriously thought that if
Lenwar's engine was running on liquid fuel it would not need to be connected to
a chimney.
He thought that by doing so he
could use the engine for many other purposes. Based on this series of research,
he soon developed a new type of carburettor that combines air and gasoline into
a combustion engine. Applied for a patent for this. However, the copyright was
denied because a similar internal engine had been developed by
others. Auto is not depressed though. Lennar was actively involved in
redesigning the engine he had invented. He soon gave up the idea and decided
that it would be better to build a completely new engine than to replace
Lenwar's engine.
As a result, he designed the
engine to run on four wheels in a completely different way than Lenwar's
two-cycle engine. There were difficulties in keeping the fire burning. He felt
that this might create some practical problems. Therefore, he developed the
Atmospheric Engine differently. Running on two full cycles it was able
to run on gas. The factory was started with the financial assistance of Auto
Eugene Langan, who had acquired the rights to the renovation. As a result of a
series of researches, he developed and manufactured two supercharged engines.
It won a gold medal at the World's Fair in Paris. Its speciality was appreciated
by many. Sales also skyrocketed.
However, he was passionate about
producing four full-fledged engines. He invented a non-flammable deposit system
as a result of relentless effort. To its advantage, he developed four fully
operational engines that were practical. It soon received its patent.
Full-fledged internal engines are still being developed today based on the
internal engine he invented. The engines are still called by the name of Auto
to this day. The locomotive he built in 1876 was the prototype for the millions
of traps that followed. Nikolaus Otto, the inventor of the first four-stroke
internal combustion engine, passed away on January 26, 1891, at the age of 58
in Cologne, Germany.
