Today (October 24, 1940) is the birthday of Padma Vibhushan Krishnasamy Kasturirangan, Former Chief Scientist of the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO).
Dr. Krishnaswamy Kasturirangan was born on October 24, 1940 in Ernakulam, Kerala. Native to Nellai district of Tamil Nadu. Kasturirangan did his schooling at SRV Govt High School Ernakulam. He graduated from Ramnarine Ruya College, Madunga, Central Mumbai. He also holds a Masters Degree in Physics from the University of Mumbai. He received his PhD in High Energy Astronomy in 1971 from the Physical Research Laboratory, Ahmedabad. He has published more than 244 papers in astronomy, space science and applications.
He joined the Indian aerospace industry and took part in the launch of
India's national satellites (INSAT series satellites), Indian remote sensing
satellites (IRS series satellites), Bhaskara satellites, polar satellite, and
launch vehicle (PSLV). From 1993 to 2003 he was the Chief Scientist of the
Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO). He served as a member of the State
Legislature from 1994 to 2003. He has authored more than 150 research papers
and 6 books. He was also the Director of the National Institute of Advanced
Studies in Bangalore from April 2004 to 2009. He is currently the Vice
Chancellor of Rajasthan Central University. Dr. Kasturirangan holds honorary
doctorates from 16 universities.
He is the recipient of three major awards, the highest Padma Shri
(1982), the Padma Bhushan (1992) and the Padma Vibhushan (2000) given by the
Government of India to Indian citizens. Also Shanti Swaroop Patnagar Award,
Shri Hari Om Ashram Dr. Vikram Sara Boy Pride Award, He has received awards such as the Birla
Memorial Award.
