Today (October 26, 1957) is Memorial Day of Gerty Theresa Gori, the first American woman to receive the Nobel Prize in Medicine for discovering glycogen metabolism.
Gerty Theresa Gori was born on August 15, 1896, in Prague. In 1914 he joined the German Charles Fernandez University to study medicine. There he graduated in 1920 with Carl Ferdinand Corey. Then, she married him. In the early days, he worked as a paediatrician. Both emigrated to the United States due to food shortages due to World War I. He worked diligently to achieve in the medical field and undertook research. Only her husband was paid when the investigations began. However, she accompanied her husband and did research work there.
Gerdy's research paper on changes in the blood was widely talked about, conducting experiments on the patient's temperature variations in research on the functions of the thyroid gland. This gave them both the opportunity to work at the Roswell Park Cancer Institute in New York and in 1928 became U.S. citizens. Continued research and published more than 50 research articles. Gerdy published eleven articles separately. In 1929 they published a famous article on the Cory cycle (also known as the lactic acid cycle). The couple co-won the 1947 Nobel Prize in Medicine for the ' Gerdy Cycle', which describes the complex chemical reaction of chemical elements in the human body into glycogen and the conversion of sugars into lactic acid in muscle tissue.
Despite the benefits of gender discrimination and acquaintances, he has not stopped engaging in his lifelong medical research. Intelligent, eloquent Cory is an excellent tester and connoisseur. By the time they left Roswell, various universities were ready to offer Carl a job. But they denied Gerdy. Gerdy once noted in a university interview that working with a 'married couple' was a very painful process. In 1931, Carl had the opportunity to work as a researcher at the University Of Washington School Of Medicine. Despite having a similar experience to her husband, Gerdy was hired as a research assistant on a tenth payroll. In 1943 he was appointed Assistant Professor of the Biochemical Laboratory for his continued efforts. Then, in 1946, he became a professor.
She and her husband were awarded the Nobel Prize in 1947 for their discovery of glycogen changes during physical activity. The Nobel Prize was awarded to Argentine scholar Bernardo Ousey for his discovery of the physiological effect of the pituitary gland on the sugar molecule. First American woman to receive the Nobel Prize in Medicine. Gerdy Theresa Gory passed away in the United States on October 26, 1957, at the age of 61, after continuing to work tirelessly in the medical field, regardless of gender. Named after a crater on the moon in Gerdyi's memory. Similarly, on Friday the Gerdy bowl is named after him. She shares a galaxy with her husband Carl at the St. Louis Achiever Memorial.
