Today (November 17) is International Students' Day to commemorate the student uprising.
International Students' Day is an
event held annually on November 17 to commemorate the student uprising
internationally. Today marks the same day in 1939 as the commemoration of the
student uprising at Charles University in Prague, the capital of
Czechoslovakia, by Nazi forces, the end of the struggle, the execution of John
Oblate and nine student leaders, and the occupation of Czechoslovakia.
This day was first celebrated in London in
1941 by the International Student Organization. Students who were then
displaced as refugees were members of the organization. The student body,
through the National Student Union of Europe and various organizations, pressed
for the event to be recognized by the United Nations. The struggle of the
students of the Athens Technical Training Center against the 1967-1974 military
rule in Greece reached its climax on November 17, 1973. On this day the
struggle was repulsed by the army.
Today is recognized as a holiday
in Greece. On the same day in 1989, a student protest in Czechoslovakia was
crushed by riot police. However, the event marked the beginning of the
overthrow of the Communist government on December 29. Today is a state holiday
in the Czech Republic and Czechoslovakia as a day of struggle for liberation
and democracy.
