Today (December 31, 1984) is the memorial day of K.R. Ramanathan, the recipient of the Padma Vibhushan, the first Director of the Physics Research Laboratory, Ahmedabad.
Kalpathi Ramakrishna Ramanathan was born on 28 February 28, 1893, in
Kalpathy, Palakkad district of Kerala. Ramanathan graduated from Government
Victoria College, Palakkad. MA Graduate BA from Chennai Provincial College
Graduated. He later obtained his MA in Physics from Madras Provincial College
(University of Chennai). He worked for KRRL in Trivandrum for seven years. This
experience helped him write a tropical research paper on thunder.
Then in 1921, Ramanathan moved to Kolkata. He holds a PhD in X-ray
Degradation in Fluids under the supervision of CV Raman. The D.Sc. He was a
graduate of the University of Madras for the first time. He was the first
Director of the Physical Research Laboratory, Ahmedabad. In 1922 Raman joined
Raman as an assistant professor of physics at the university. In 1925 he was
appointed a Senior Scientist in the Meteorological Department of India. He
remained there until his retirement in 1948. In the same year, he joined the
Physical Research Laboratory (PRL), Ahmedabad as its first director. He also
established the Dobson Ozone Spectrum Photographic Scale in India.
Ramanathan retired in 1966. From 1984 until his death at the age of 91,
he worked at the Physics Laboratory, Ahmedabad. In 1934, the Indian National
Science Foundation awarded the World Meteorological Organization Award for
Astronomy. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan Award (1965), the Padma Vibhushan
Award (1976) and the Aryabhata Medal in 1977 by the National Science Foundation
of India. KR. Ramanathan, the first Director of the Physics Research Laboratory,
Ahmedabad, passed away on December 31, 1984, at the age of 91.
