Today is National Youth Day, (January 12, 1863) the birthday of Swami Vivekananda, a rational thinker who delivered many world-famous speeches.

The Government of India has decided to observe Swami Vivekananda's birthday on January 12 as National Youth Day. Every year since 1985, January 12 has been observed as National Youth Day 1984. It is noteworthy that at the inauguration of Swami Vivekananda's 150th birthday celebrations on January 12, 2013, the then Prime Minister of India Manmohan Singh wished Vivekananda to celebrate his birthday throughout the year. Swami Vivekananda was born on January 12, 1863, in Calcutta to Viswanath Datta and Bhuvaneswari Devi. Mother tongue is Bengali. At a young age, he had a great memory and was a great athlete. He studied music and musical instruments. He practised meditation from a young age. He was also a rationalist.

After completing his schooling he joined the Presidency College in Calcutta in 1879. He later studied philosophy at the Scottish Church College. There he studied foreign philosophies, as well as the history of European countries. During this time many questions and doubts arose in his mind about the divine truths. It seemed paradoxical to him that many worshipped the Lord and that the world was full of differences and inequalities. Discussed this with many adults. He also became a member of the Brahma Samaj, which was popular at the time. But in none of these attempts did he adequately answer the questions. Swami Vivekananda had two younger brothers and sisters, Mahendranath Tatar and Bhupendranath Tatar. Bhupendranath Tatar was a fighter for Indian independence. One of the sisters committed suicide at a young age due to the cruelty of the family who had given her in marriage. Vivekananda heard about Ramakrishna and went to him to learn about the divine truths.

The year Vivekananda first met Ramakrishna was 1881. Vivekananda, who rationally accepted anything, was at first unable to fully accept Ramakrishna's views on God. Worship was not immediately accepted either. The teachings of Ramakrishna were meant to convey the truth that exists in both ways, without teaching a single separate way called idolatry or idolatry. Through the involvement of Ramakrishna, Vivekananda was able to understand the necessity of both devotional religion and enlightenment religion. After Ramakrishna died in 1886, Vivekananda and other early disciples of Ramakrishna became monks. Vivekananda then toured the Indian subcontinent for four years. Through his travels, Vivekananda got to know the culture, culture and living conditions of all parts of India. The living conditions of the Indian people at that time were very low. Moreover, it was a time of slavery to the Indian English.

At the end of his journey, Vivekananda went to Kanyakumari on December 24, 1892, where he meditated for three days on a rock in the middle of the sea. He later mentioned that the three days were spent meditating on India's past, present, and future. The rock is still preserved as a memorial to Vivekananda. Vivekananda, who came to Chennai from Kanyakumari, was requested by the youth of Chennai to attend the 1893 World Conference on Religion in the United States on behalf of Hinduism. Vivekananda accepted it and travelled to America. His speeches at the World Religious Conference in Chicago were well received in that country. He also stayed in the highlands for a few years and gave many discourses and introduced them to Vedanta ideas. He established theological centres in New York and London. His speeches from Colombo to Calcutta after his return to India in 1897 are considered to have awakened the then lower-class Indians and made the youth realize their potential.

Vivekananda, who established the fame of Hinduism on the world stage with his discourse, left the United States for Sri Lanka and landed at Pamban Kundukal on 26.01.1897. Bhaskara Sethupathi, the then King of Ramanathapuram Samasthana gave a very special welcome is Pamban. Vivekananda founded the Ramakrishna movement and monastery in Calcutta. From January 1899 to December 1900 he made a second voyage overseas. He can be seen emphasizing in all his discourses and writings that man is divine in nature and that manifesting this divinity is the essence of human life. He wanted the spirituality, which was confined to the Rishis living in the forests and mountains and to only a section of the community, to spread to everyone in the community. He thinks that one who follows the Vedanta ideas can do any work in the community better. He established the Ramakrishna Monastery on the principle that public service is the service of the Mahesan.

The mottos of Vivekananda.

  • ·    You can renounce anything for the sake of truth, but you must not renounce the truth for anything.
  • ·    If there is a God we must see Him, if there is a soul we must realize it, otherwise it is better not to have faith. It is better to be an atheist than to pretend.
  • ·   Do not talk about the shortcomings of the world. Grieve towards grievances, you will find grievances everywhere. But, if you want to help the world, do not insult the world, do not criticize. Do not weaken the world further by complaining. Aren't the world's faults and crimes all the result of its weakness?
  • ·    Action is good, thinking and acting are good. Fill your mind with lofty ideals and thoughts. Put them in front of you every day and night; Good deeds will result from it.
  • ·      We regret the evils in the world. We do not care in the slightest about the toxins that arise in our souls. This world itself will be in order if the soul is in order.
  • ·        There is no difference between God and Satan except selflessness and selfishness.
  • ·        Always avoid jealousy. You end up doing all of the great things you have never done before.
  • ·        Our country stands for soldiers. Become players!
  • ·        Young people, give your shoulders to shake the wheel of national progress.
  • ·       Young people, if you have faith in me and dare to believe in me, a bright future awaits you.
  • ·        Strength is a happy permanent lasting prosperous immortal life.
  • ·        Throw away selfishness and work.
  • ·        I want your children to be a hundred times better than me.
  • ·        You become what you think you are
  • ·        If you think you are strong, you are strong!
  • ·        I am responsible for where I am now
