Today (January 24, 1922) is the birthday of Rajeswari Chatterjee, India's first female scientist who did research in the field of microwave engineering.

Rajeswari Chatterjee was born on January 24, 1922, in Karnataka. One of the first female graduates from Mysore, she received her primary education at a "special English school" founded by her grandmother Kamalama Dasappa. Who was very active in the field of education (especially widows). After the school finals, he aspired to make history. But eventually chose physics and mathematics. He studied at Bangalore Central College. He holds a BSc (Hans) and MSc degrees in Mathematics. He topped the University of Mysore in both these examinations. He also received the Mammadi Krishnaraja Wodeyar Award, M.D. He received the Narayana Iyengar Prize and the Walters Memorial Prize for outstanding performance in the B.Sc. and M.Sc. examinations respectively.

In 1943, after his MSc, he joined the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bangalore as a research student in the field of Communication in Electrical Technology. Rajeswari Chatterjee CV Raman wanted to work under him. Some sources say that Raman has denied that Rajeswari has no degree in physics. Others say he doesn’t like the idea of getting female students. After World War II, an interim government was formed in India to transfer power from the British to the Indians. It provided scholarships for bright young scientists to study abroad. He applied for such a scholarship in the field of electronics and its applications. And in 1946, he was selected as the "brightest student" by the Delhi government. Scholarships were also given to go abroad to pursue higher studies.

Rajeswari Chatterjee chose to study further at Ann Arbor, University of Michigan, USA. In the 1950s it was very difficult for Indian women to go abroad to pursue higher education. But Chatterjee was determined to do so. In July 1947, a month before India's independence, S.S. He began his voyage to the United States aboard the Marine Order. Went there after 30 days. In the United States, he was admitted to the University of Michigan and earned a master’s degree in electrical engineering. He then followed the guidelines of the contract he had with the Government of India and underwent eight months of practical training in the Radio Frequency Measurements Division at the National Bureau in Washington DC. After training, he went back to the University of Michigan. In 1949, Barber received a scholarship to resume his studies. In early 1953, under the guidance of Professor William Gold Dove, he successfully completed his dissertation and received his PhD.

In 1953, after completing his PhD, he returned to India and became a faculty member in IISC Electrical Communication Engineering. He later taught "electromagnetic theory, electron tube circuits, microwave technology and radio engineering". In the same year, she married Sisir Kumar Chatterjee, a faculty member of the same college. After marriage, Rajeswari Chatterjee and her husband set up a microwave research laboratory and began research in the field of microwave engineering. It is the first research laboratory in India. During the same period, Chatterjee was elected head of the Department of Electrical Communication Engineering. During his lifetime, he mentored 20 PhD students. He has authored more than 100 research papers and authored seven books.

Following her retirement from IISC in 1982, she worked on social projects, including the Indian Society for the Study of Women. India's first female scientist. He is a pioneer in the microwave and sensory engineering. She was the first female professor at the Indian Academy of Sciences and retired as the Head of the Department of Electrical Communication Engineering at the Institute. Rajeswari Chatterjee, a researcher in the field of microwave engineering, passed away on September 03, 2010, at the age of 88.
