Today (February 28, 1930) is the birthday of Leon Cooper, winner of the Nobel Prize in Physics for his study of superconductivity.
Leon N Cooper was born on
February 28, 1930, in New York, USA. Cooper graduated from the Franks High
School of Science in 1947. He received his bachelor's degree in 1951 and his
master's degree in 1953. He also received his doctorate in 1954 from Columbia
University. He worked for a year at the Institute of Higher Education, the
University of Illinois and the University of Ohio. He then joined Brown
University in 1958. He was predeceased by Thomas J. Watson Sr. Brown was a
science professor to him when he was at university. He also served as director
of the Brain and Neurological Institute. In 1969, Cooper married Coy Allard.
They have two children.
Cooper conducted research at
various educational institutions, including the Institute of Advanced Study and
the European Federation for Nuclear Research in Geneva, Switzerland. Shelton
Cooper, the character in The Big Bang Theory, a comedy film produced by
Columbia Broadcasting System, was later named in his memory. He is also the
recipient of the Nobel Prize in Physics for his study of superconductivity.
John Bardeen and John Robert Schreiber shared the Nobel Prize with him. And
those who expanded and adjusted the PCS theory of superconductivity. The study
of the elasticity of neurons (PCM study) is called the Cooper pair study by his
name.
