Today (February 8, 1979) is the Memorial Day of Dennis Gabor, the Nobel laureate of physics for the discovery of three-dimensional holography.
Dennis Gabor was born on June 5,
1900, in a Jewish family in Budapest, Hungary. In 1918, his family converted to
Lutheranism. He was the first son of his parents. He grew up a believer and
later called himself an atheist. During World War I, he served in the Northern
Artillery in Northern Italy. From 1918 he studied electrical engineering at the
University of Budapest Technology and the Charlottenburg Technical University
in Berlin. He started his work after studying. Cathode investigated the
properties of high voltage bars using radiographic oscillography. Thereby, his
interest in electron optics returned. He also actively researched oscillograph,
electron microscope and TV ray tubes. He graduated in 1927 with a doctorate.
He left Nazi Germany as a danger.
British Thompson moved to England in 1933 to accept the invitation to work in
the development industry of Houston. He married the English woman Marjorie in
1936 and became a British citizen in 1946. Holographic photography was
discovered in 1947. But it was only after the invention of the laser in 1960
that it was released and put into commercial use. Holography is a technology
that records the light emitted from an object in its different image types and
displays the motion of the object in 3D. This technology has been used in many
famous Hollywood films.
From 1946 to 1951, he published
his research results in a series of research articles titled Time
Re-Holography. In 1948, he joined the Imperial College London as a professor of
physics. In 1963 he published Inventing the Future Model. As research into
lasers progressed, holographic three-dimensional adhesives were made into
circulation. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1971 for his
discovery of three-dimensional holography. Dennis Gabor, who won the Nobel
Prize in Physics, left the world on February 8, 1979, in his 78th year, in
London, England.
