Today (July 12, 1997) is the birthday of Malala Yousafzai, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize as a child.
Malala Yousafzai was born on July 12, 1997, into a lower-middle-class
family in the Swat district of Pakistan's northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa
province. She is the daughter of Jiawuddin Yousafzai and Dor Bekai Yusufzai.
His family is Sunni Muslims from the Pashtun tribe of the Yusufzai tribe. The
family did not have enough money to give birth in the hospital. As a result,
Yusufzai was born at home with the help of a neighbor. She was given her first
name, Malala ("suffering"), after Malawi, a famous Pashtun poet, and
warrior from southern Afghanistan. At his home in Mingora, he lived with his
two younger brothers, Kushal and Atal, his parents, Jiawuddin and Dor Bekai,
and two pet chickens.
Yusufzai, who was fluent in Pashto, Urdu, and English, was mostly
educated by his father, Jiawuddin Yusufzai. He is a poet, school owner, and education activist who runs a chain of private schools called Kushal Public
School. In an interview, Yusufzai once said that he aspired to be a doctor. But
then his father encouraged him to become a politician. Jiawuddin mentioned that
his daughter was completely special. He got up at night after his two brothers
were sent to bed and were allowed to talk about politics.
Inspired by Muhammad Ali Jinnah and Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto,
Yusufzai began talking about educational rights. Since September 2008, he has
taken his father to Peshawar to speak at a local press conference. How dare the
Taliban take away my basic right to education? Yusufzai asked his audience in a
speech covering newspapers and television channels throughout the region. In
2009, Yusufzai started as a trainer and later as a fellow educator in the Open
Mind Pakistan Youth Program for War and Peace Reporting. It has worked in
schools in the region, helping young people engage in constructive discussion
on social issues through press tools.
Malala went to school in defiance of the Taliban's ban on girls going to
school in her area. As early as 2009, through his BBC Urdu blog, he described
how his hometown was being controlled by the Pakistani Taliban. However, his
identity was not known as it was written under a pseudonym. He has been widely
known since appearing live in a television interview and has been targeted by
the conservative Taliban. Malala Yousafzai has been awarded Pakistan's first
Peace Prize.
Malala was shot dead by the Taliban on October 9, 2012. Following his
injury, this was strongly condemned at home and abroad. The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa
state government has announced a reward of up to Rs 1 crore for information
leading to the shooting. He was awarded the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize. He was the
recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize at a very young age. He received the
"Bravery Award" from the World Peace and Prosperity Foundation.
Malala Yousafzai called on men and women to unite in the fight against
illiteracy, poverty, and extremism. We carry books and pens in hand. These are
the weapons of our struggle. The pen is stronger than the sword. A child, a
teacher, a book, a pen, these are enough to completely change this world. Education
is the only solution. Education comes first. I am one of the thousands who have
been persecuted by Taliban extremists. This frantic attack made no difference
to me. Instead, I chased away all of my fear, weakness, and despair.
On her 12th birthday on July 12, 2013, Malala contacted the United
Nations to demand that children around the world be educated. The United
Nations has declared the event "Malala Day". This is the first
interview he has given since he was attacked.
