Yash Pal was born on November 26, 1926, in Zhang, British India. This place is currently in Pakistan. He grew up in Pai, a town near Kaithal in Haryana. Later, he studied at Punjab University in Chandigarh and at the University of Massachusetts. He started his career at the Tata Basic Research Institute in Mumbai. Later, he studied at MIT and continued in the old place again. He has been the Director of the Space Application Center in Ahmedabad and the Chief Adviser to the Indian Planning Commission. Undertook studies of space rays. Since then, he has also chaired the University Grants Committee.

He was also the Vice Chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru University in Delhi. He was honored with the Kalinga Award by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization for his contribution to the development of science. Received the Padma Bhushan Award from the Government of India in 1976. In 2013, he received the Padma Vibhushan award. Yash Pal is best known for his regular appearances on Doordarshan's Turning Point broadcast, and for interpreting scientific ideas in the language of ordinary people. He participated in advisory groups for television science projects such as Bharat Ki Saab and answered readers' science-related questions for the English daily The Tribune.

 

Pal, a colleague of the Indian National Academy of Sciences, was appointed a Marconi Fellow in 1980 for his work at the Space Application Center in Ahmedabad. In 2009, he received the UNESCO Kalinga Prize for Fame in Science. In October 2011, he was awarded the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Award for Excellence in Public Administration, Academics, and Management. He received the Indira Gandhi Prize (2000) for popularizing science and the Magnet Saha Medal (2006) for his outstanding contribution to science. Yash Pal, a recipient of the Padma Bhushan award, passed away on July 24, 2017, in Noida, Uttar Pradesh at the age of 90.
