Today (October 29, 1923) is the birthday of Carl Djerassi, the inventor of birth control pills.
Carl Djerassi was born on October
29, 1923, in Vienna, Austria. But he spent the first years of his childhood in
Sofia, Bulgaria. His father, Samuel Djerassi, was a dermatologist and
specialist in sexually transmitted diseases. His mother was Alice Friedman, a
dentist in Vienna. Both parents are Jewish. Following the divorce of his
parents, Djerassi and his mother moved to Vienna. Until the age of 14, Sigmund
Freud attended the same real gymnasium he had attended many years earlier. He
spent the summer in Bulgaria with his father.
He received his primary education in schools in Vienna, Austria. He came to the United States at the age of sixteen. He graduated from a college in Missouri with a degree in chemistry and studied at Kenyon College in Ohio. In 1951, a research team led by Carl Djerassi discovered an element called North Rinron. When he discovered this, he was 28. Carl Djerassi developed pills for family planning based on the elemental component. He was involved in research throughout his life. Carl Djerassi worked in chemical companies and pharmaceutical companies.
He was a Distinguished Professor
of Chemistry at the world-renowned Stanford University and has made significant
contributions to the field of organic chemistry. He has authored over 1200 research
articles, science fiction and plays. His history was written and published in 4
volumes. He has received awards from many organizations in recognition of his
achievements. He is a versatile scientist, novelist and playwright. Carl Djerassi,
who developed the contraceptive pill through her research, passed away on
January 30, 2015, at the age of 91 in California, USA.
