Today (February 10, 1993) is the Memorial
Day of Bengt Edlen, who discovered that the spectra of the Sun (corona) are
formed by multiple iron electrons (Fe-XIV).
Bengt Edlen was born on November 2, 1906, in Kusum, Sweden. He graduated from high school in Norcopping in 1926. Entered Uppsala University in the same year. After three semesters he was awarded a bachelor’s degree. He received his PhD in 1934 with his dissertation on the spectrum and energy of the elements at the beginning of the period. He gained international fame after discovering unidentified spectral lines in the Sun's spectrum. It is speculated to have originated from a hitherto unidentified chemical called coronium.
He rejected previous assumptions that the sun's spectra came from the unknown chemical coronium and clarified that they were formed by multiple iron electrons (Fe-XIV). His discovery was not immediately accepted, as ionization requires temperatures in the millions of degrees. Such solar corona temperatures were then checked. He also played an important role in analyzing the spectra of Wolf-Royd stars.
Edline was a professor at the University of Lund from 1944 to 1973. He was elected a member of the Swedish Academy of Sciences in 1947. Edlan Wolf-Ray has made excellent contributions by analyzing the radiographs of galaxies. Bend Edlen received the Swedish Government Astronomical Medal of Medal in 1945 for solving a solar puzzle. In 1946, Overd. Pots won the medal. He also received the Draper Medal in 1968 from the National Academy of Sciences. Penrith Edline passed away on February 10, 1993, at the age of 86, in Lund, Sweden, after discovering that the sun's spectra were formed by multiple iron electrons (Fe-XIV).
