Today (February 21, 1894) is the birthday of Padma Bhushan S.S.Bhatnagar the world-renowned Indian physicist and ‘father of Indian science and industry laboratories’, who pioneered industrial development.

Sir Shanti Swaroop Bhatnagar was born on February 21, 1894, in Shapur, Punjab (present-day Pakistan). He lost his father when he was a child. He completed his primary education in Secunderabad. He received his B.Sc. in Physics in 1916 from Foreman Christian College, Lahore. Degree and M.Sc. in Chemistry in 1919. Degree. D.Sc. from University College London. Degree in science. Returning home in 1921, he joined the Banaras Hindu University in Kashi as a Professor of Chemistry. Three years later he was appointed Director of the Department of Chemical Laboratory, Punjab University, Lahore. He was involved in research on colloids, emulsions, industrial chemistry, and magnetic chemistry. In 1928 he co-founded the magnetic interference balance instrument with KN Mathur.

Kangaram Agarwal hailed as the ‘Father of Lahore’, sought his advice on what to do with the wasted waste in his sugarcane mills. With these, he developed a method of making animal feed. He found solutions to various industrial problems of textile mills, flour mills, oil mills and steel mills. Steel Brothers, a petroleum drilling company based in Rawalpindi, approached him seeking a solution to its industrial problem. This was also solved with the help of gel chemistry. His book ‘Physical Principles’ and ‘Applications of Chemistry’, co-authored with fellow scientist KN Mathur in 1935, is still the leading book in the field today.

At the initiative of Bhatnagar, the Scientific and Industrial Research Board was established in 1940 as is the case in Britain. He was appointed its director. This was followed by the formation of the Industrial Research Utilization Committee (IRUC). The Scientific and Professional Research Forum (CSIR) was launched to integrate the two organizations. With this, he established the National Chemical Research Center, the National Physical Research Center, the Glass and Ceramic Research Center, and the Fuel Research Station. After the liberation of India, CSIR Was appointed head of the organization. Served as the first Director of the Scientific and Industrial Research Forum set up after the liberation of India. An English company that simply solved a technical problem while drilling an oil well.

He was responsible for the emergence of research centres in India. Invented methods for converting petroleum waste into used material. Recipient of the Padma Bhushan, India's highest award in 1955. The Shanti Swaroop Bhatnagar Award is given in his name. Shanti Swaroop Bhatnagar, who laid the foundation for the development of the country by uniting the Indian science and industry, passed away on January 1, 1955, in New Delhi at the age of 61. In his memory, the ‘Shanti Swaroop Bhatnagar’ award is being given to scientists who have contributed to the scientific and technological development of the country.
