Today (April 11, 1862) is the birthday of William Wallace Campbell, an American astronomer who won the Asu Astronomical Medal.
William Wallace Campbell was born
on April 11, 1862, on a farm in Angkor, Ohio. Father Robert Wilson, mother
Ariath Wales Campbell. After finishing school in his hometown, he enrolled at
the University of Michigan in 1886 for a Bachelor of Science degree in civil
engineering. While at university he developed an interest in astronomy as he
read Simon Newcomb's People's astronomy book. After graduation, he was hired as
a professor of mathematics at the University of Colorado. He soon returned to
Michigan to work as an astronomy instructor. In 1891 he was invited to work in
radiology at the University of California, Los Angeles. He was a pioneer in
astronomical radiology. He tabulated the radial velocities of the stars.
In 1893, Wolf discovered the
constellation HD 184738. It is also known as the Campbell asteroid. From 1901
to 1930 Ilik was also employed as a director of meteorology. His nostrils faded
in 1919, so he repeated them in 1922. So in 1922 he led a group in Australia
and filmed the solar eclipse. These data provided further evidence for Albert
Einstein's line of relativity. Three years later, in 1931, Eddington became
president of the American National Academy of Sciences in Washington. Campbell
was president of the University of California from 1923 to 1930. He also served
on the Board of Trustees of the Board of Trustees from 1923 to 1926. It is now
known as the Society for Science and People. He was president of the Pacific
Astronomical Society three times in 1895, 1909 and 1918.
Ireland Medal of the French
Academy of Sciences (1903), Enrique Trapper Medal of the National Academy of
Sciences (1906), Gold Medal of the Astronomical Society (1906), Johnson Medal
(1910), Bruce Medal (1915), and Foreign Member of the Government of London
(1918), Government of Edinburgh Has received books such as The Club Eligibility
