The former head of the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), physicist and Padma Vibhushan award-winning M.G.K Menon Memorial Day today (November 22, 2016).
M.G.K. Menon (Mambillikalathil
Govind Kumar Menon) was born on August 28, 1928, in Mangalore, Karnataka. Native
of Kerala. Govindakumar Menon's full name is Mambillkalam. Father, District
Judge. Thus, the family was constantly changing to many towns. Educated at
Kurnool, Cuddalore. He continued his education in Jodhpur, Rajasthan. He passed
the matriculation examination in 1942. Go with father at a young age Sir. After
meeting CV Raman, he made him an ideal hero. He graduated in Physics from the
University of Agra. He holds a Master’s Degree from the Royal Institute of
Science, Mumbai. Conducted research in spectroscopy. Served as President of the
Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata.
When the Tata Research Institute
was started he accepted Homi baba’s invitation and joined it. He was involved
in research into the manufacture of plastic balloons that carry instruments
into space. This is India's pioneering research project in the field of
aerospace. Cecil F., winner of the Nobel Prize in 1953. Under Powell's
guidance, he studied cosmic rays and received his doctorate from the University
Of Bristol, England. His research on cosmic rays and particle physics is
significant. He was involved in the study of how cosmic rays work in the
deepest part of the earth's crust. Kolar sent the rays deep into the gold mine
and explored the neutrinos they emitted.
He was appointed Dean and Deputy
Director at Tata Research Institute in a very short period as he had
research knowledge, embraced the character and had excellent leadership qualities. Tata
developed the Basic Research Institute after Homi Baba. Through his tireless
efforts, Tata has made tremendous strides in the fields of biosciences, radio
astronomy, solid-state electronics and geophysics. He learned from Paul that
the vast spectrum of human labour could be scientifically applied to create
anything beautiful. Similarly, he learned from Homi Baba that successful
research in India can be made possible with the help of proper planning,
cooperation of like-minded people and choosing the right place for a particular
task.
His team found several important
results in neutrino-related research. When the galaxy collided, new particles
called ‘Muon’ were discovered. Globally, neutrino research has intensified
since the report was presented as a paper at the International Cosmic Research
Conference. After Homibaba died in 1966, he was appointed to his post. Homi
Baba executed Jamshedji Tata's visionary plans. In 1972 he became the head of
the Indian Space Research Organization. Although he worked there for 9 months,
he left a deep impression. He also served as the Prime Minister's Scientific
Adviser to the Central Planning Commission. He was instrumental in the
development of science and technology in India for four decades.
He has received many awards such
as the Padmasree (1961), the Padma Bhushan (1968), the Padma Vibhushan (1985),
the Shanti Swaroop Patnagar Award and the British FRS Award. The satellite,
launched in 2008, was named '7564 Kokumenan'. He was affectionately known as
‘Goku’ by fellow scientists. He was also the Union Minister of Science,
Technology and Education in 1989-90. He was also a member of the Delhi State
Council in 1990-96. MGK contributes to India's modern scientific development
Menon passed away on November 22, 2016, at the age of 88. In 2008, one satellite
was named 7564 Kokumenon in honour of MGK Menon.
