Today (November 11, 1943) is the birthday of Anil Kakodkar, the recipient of the Padma Vibhushan award for his service to the Indian Atomic Energy Department.
Anil Kakodkar was born on
November 11, 1943, in Parwani, Madhya Pradesh. His parents are Kamala Kakodkar
and Purusottam Kakodkar. Both of them are Gandhians. He completed his schooling
in Parwani and Mumbai. He studied college at Ruparel College, Mumbai. He also
joined the Veeramatha Jijabai Technical College, Mumbai in 1963 to pursue a
degree in Mechanical Engineering. Anil Kakodkar joined the Baba Atomic Research
Station in Mumbai in 1964. Kagodkar joined the nuclear engineering department
at the Baba Atomic Research Institute. He was instrumental in the design and
construction of the purely high-tech Truva nuclear reactor. He was one of the
key members of India's peacekeeping nuclear tests in 1974 and 1998.
Anil Kakodkar has guided India’s
domestic development projects of pressurized heavy water nuclear reactor
technology. He was instrumental in the reconstruction of two nuclear reactors
at Kalpakkam and the first unit at Rawatbhata, which was to be abandoned at one
stage. He has been the Director of the Baba Atomic Research Institute since
1996 and has been the Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission of India since
2000 and the Secretary of the Indian Atomic Energy Department. He has published
more than 250 scientific articles. He strongly believed that India could become
self-sufficient, especially in the use of cheap thorium resources as fuel for
nuclear power.
He continues to design the
advanced heavy water reactor using plutonium-powered thorium-uranium 233
elements as the primary nuclear power source. About 75% of electricity can be
generated from thorium through a unique furnace system designed with simple but
safe technology. Kakodkar is a member of several commissions and other
organizations. Chairman, Board of Governors, Indian Institute of Technology,
Bombay, 2006-15. He is a member of the Atomic Energy Commission, a member of
the ONGC Energy Center Foundation, Chairman of the Committee on Indian
Technological Institutions (IITs) Authority on Reforms, and an Honorary Member
of the International Atomic Energy Academy and the World Innovation Foundation.
Padma Shri Award (1998), Padma
Bhushan (1999), Padma Vibhushan (2009), Maharashtra State-Maharashtra Bhushan
Award (2012), Goa State-Koman Vibhushan Award (2010), Hari Om Ashram Vikram
Sarabhai Award (1988), Science and HK for Technology Ferodia Award (1997),
Rockwell Medal for Excellence in Technology (1997), FICCI Award for Outstanding
Contribution to Atomic Science and Technology (1997-98), ANACON - 1998 Lifetime
Achievement Award for Atomic Research, H.J. He has received awards such as the
Baba Memorial Award (1999-2000), the Homi Baba Lifetime Achievement Award
(2010), and the Acharya Varagamir Award (2004) from Varagamir.
