Today (June 4, 1941) is the birthday of Darshan Ranganathan, the most famous pioneer researcher on protein folding.
Darshan Ranganathan was born on
June 4, 1941, to Vidyavati Morgan and Shanti Swaroop. He received his primary
education in Delhi. He received his Ph.D. in Chemistry in 1967 from the
University of Delhi. A lecturer at Miranda College, Delhi, he later became the
Head of the Department of Chemistry at the College. He then went on to study at
the Royal Society 'Exhibition 1851' in London and went to Imperial College
London for postgraduate study. There he studied with Trek Barton. Darshan Ranganathan
started his research in 1970 at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur. She Married Ranganathan and
Together with her husband, she
authored a book, Challenging Problems in Organic Reactivity (1972), The Art of
Biotech: The Challenge for Chemists (1976), and Some Other Challenging Problems
in Organic Reaction (1980). He was also involved in the publication of
"Current Organic Chemistry Brief Notes". He received scholarships and
continued his research in Kanpur on that basis. She was unable to join as fieldwork due to an unwritten rule of law because her husband was on duty
there. He continued his research in 1993 at the Regional Laboratory of the National
Institute for Interdisciplinary Research in Science and Technology,
Thiruvananthapuram, and in 1998 at the Indian Institute of Chemical Technology,
Hyderabad. There he became co-director.
Darshan Ranganathan has done a
lot of work in biochemistry. He is best known for his "pioneering study of
protein folding". He is "highly regarded for his study of molecular
composition, molecular design, synthesis of reactive peptides, and synthesis of
microtubules." From there, he developed a protocol for the automatic
extraction of one of their constituents, imidazole, which played a major role
in pharmacology.
Darshan Ranganathan, best known
for his pioneering work on protein folding, passed away on June 4, 2001, on his
60th birthday due to breast cancer. In her memory, her husband created a
bi-annual lecture in 2001 called Professor Darshan Ranganathan Memorial
Lecture. Female scientists eminent in science and technology will be invited to
give lectures.
