Today (February 15, 1861) is the birthday of Alfred North Whitehead, a
great mathematician who made a great impact in the fields of algebra, science,
philosophy, and physics.
Alfred North Whitehead was born on 15 February 1861 in England. Although Alfred North Whitehead's grandfather Thomas Whitehead ran a Chatham House for Boys, he attended the Sherborne School in Dorset, one of the best schools in the UK. He excelled in mathematics and sports at school. From 1880 to 1910, he studied, taught and performed at Trinity College, Cambridge. In the 1890s he researched and composed the Treatise on Universal Algebra in 1898. In the 1900s he co-authored the first edition of Principia Mathematica with his alumnus Bertrand Russell.
He left Cambridge in 1910 after the publication of the first volume of Principia, realizing that he was less likely to become a professor at Cambridge. In 1891 Whitehead married Evelyn Wade, an Irish woman who grew up in France. They had two sons and a daughter. A son who participated in the Royal Flying Corps (Royal Flying Corps) during World War I has died. Bertrand Russell spent most of 1918 in prison for emphasizing peace during this period. Whitehead, however, saw Russell go to prison and did not largely accept the peace policy. Similarly, Russell ridiculed Whitehead's involvement with the principles of Platonism and Panpsychism. After World War II, Whitehead and Russell were uninformed. Whitehead did not comment on the 1925 edition of Principia Mathematica, published in 1925.
Whitehead has always been involved in theology, especially in the 1890s. His family was based in the Church of England. His father and his siblings were church vicars. Whitehead's brother was a bishop in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. At the urging of Whitehead's wife, Cardinal Newman became interested in Roman Catholicism through his writings. Before World War I, he had no inclination toward God. Then God became a believer. However, he did not formally join any church. The Unitarians call him their friend. Whitehead was also very involved in physics. James Clark Maxwell analyzed his views on the electromagnet in his dissertation on Fellow Fellowship.
Whitehead's view of mathematics and physics is more of a philosophical perspective than a purely scientific one. He looked more closely at the possibilities and nature of their broader development than the personal opinions and questions of the departments. Whitehead was president of the Aristotelian group of scientific thinkers from 1922 to 1923. From 1910 to 1924 Whitehead wrote and taught mostly at University College London and Imperial College London on the concepts and activities of physics, the philosophy of science, and education. He has been a Fellow of the Royal Society since 1903. He was later elected a member of the British Academic Council in 1931. Whitehead proposed a conceptual theory of general relativity in physics that competed with Einstein's theory. But this was not welcomed.
This is because the gravitational constant G (gravitational constant G) was a variable, as opposed to a practical measurement reality. So Whitehead's semantics policy is not accepted. But his 1919 publication "Enquiry Concerning the Principles of Natural Knowledge" was gaining momentum. It is an attempt to compile the basic philosophical theories of physics. Yet this did not have a major impact on contemporary physics. He is a scholar who has made a great impact in the fields of algebra, astronomy, the foundations of mathematics, philosophy of science, physics, metaphysics, and education. Principia Mathematica, co-authored with Bertrand Russell, is considered a mathematician in mathematics. The great mathematician Alfred North Whitehead passed away on December 30, 1947, in Massachusetts, USA at the age of 52.
