Today (March 16, 1789) is the birthday of the German physicist Georg Simon Ohm, who discovered the relationship between Voltage and current.
George Simon Ohm was born on
March 16, 1789 in Erlangen, Brandenburg-Berit Germany. Educated at the
University of Erlangen. While working as a school teacher, Ohm began his
research with the electrochemical cell discovered by the Italian physicist
Volta. He found a direct correlation between the difference
between the two terminals of a conductor (Voltage) and the resulting current
with his own tools. Describing this relationship is known as Ohm's law. The
unit of resistance in international teams is named Ohm (code).
When a voltage is applied to a
conductor, current flows through it. The magnitude of that current depends on
the importance of the Voltage used to it. For example, suppose V is the amount of
Voltage flowing between the two terminals of an electric conductor (e.g.
metals, ducts) with a resistance of R. In that case, the magnitude of that current can
be calculated as follows: V = IR. This idea was put forward in 1827 by the
German scholar Georg Ohm. This comment he made was later given as Ohmin's
rule. In short, Ohm's law states that the current I flowing in a conductor I
has a direct proportional dependence on the voltage V given between its two
terminals.
In other words, the ratio between
voltage and current is constant. That is, this continuous number R is called
the electrical resistance. By Ohming current with current, one can
understand Ohm's law. If the water pressure is Voltage, the current is current, and a present barrier is resistance; the higher the water pressure, the higher
the current.
Before them, in 1781, Henry
Cavendish filled saltwater in glass tubes of different sizes and injected
electricity into them. Accordingly, he found that the magnitude of the current
also changes if the importance of the voltage changes. But their discovery went
unnoticed by other researchers. The discovery was later made in 1879 by the
scientist James Clerk Maxwell. George Ohm was awarded the Copley Medal in 1841.
The German physicist George Simon Ohm, who discovered the connection between
Voltage and current, passed away on July 6, 1854, at the age of 65 in Munich,
Bavaria.
