Today (May 10, 1930) is the birthday of Nobel Prize-winning American physicist George Elwood Smith, who invented the fossil microwave circuit (CCD) sensor.
George Elwood Smith was born on
May 10, 1930, in Smith White Plains, NY. Smith served in the United States Navy.
He earned his bachelor's degree in 1955 at the University of Pennsylvania and
his doctorate in 1959 at the University of Chicago. It should be noted that his
lab was just three pages long. Smith worked at the Bell Laboratory in Murray
Hill, New Jersey, from 1959 until his retirement in 1986. Here he was involved
in the study of new laser rays and semiconductor devices. During his tenure, he
patented various inventions. He also assumed the leadership role of the VLSI
Device Bureau.
In 1969, Smith and Boy co-invented
the charge-coupled device, CCD. The two received the Stuart Ballantine Medal in
1973 from the Franklin Institute and the Stuart Ballantine Medal. He received
the IEEE Morris N. Liebmann Memorial Award in 1974, the Charles Stark Draper
Prize in 2006, and the 2009 Nobel Prize in Physics. Smith and Boy are keen on
sailing. The two have traveled together. After his retirement, he traveled
around the world with his life partner, Janet, for seventeen years. However,
after 2003, he was forced to leave his hobby due to bone fractures. He
currently resides in Wardown, New Jersey.
