Today (December 15, 1852) is the birthday of Henri Becquerel, the Nobel Laureate in discovered Radiation.
Antoine Henri Becquerel was born on December 15, 1852, in Paris. His
family has four generations of scientists, including him and his son Sean. In
1892 he became head of the physics department at the National Arsenal of
France, and later in 1894 became an engineer in the Department of Bridges and
Highways. Becquerel accidentally discovered radiation in 1896 while studying
the phosphorescence of uranium salts. In an experiment exploring the findings
of Willem Rontgen, Becquerel placed the luminous substance potassium uranyl sulphur
on photographic plates, wrapping the plates around black paper and exposing
them to sunlight. The principle of illumination is the research of some of the
objects that were left to warm in the sun and then glow in the dark. In his scientific
study, he discovered that pitch-blend, a substance containing uranium,
contained an element other than uranium. However, before the experiment began,
he noticed that the photographs were completely exposed.
He discovered that uranium and its salts emit invisible radiation and
that they penetrate through paper, wood, glass, etc. and affect the
photosphere. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1903 along with Marie Curie and
Pierre Curie for their discovery of radiation. The SI system of radiation is named
Becker (Bq) in his memory. In 1908 Becker was appointed Permanent Secretary of
the Academy of Sciences. He has received the Rumford Prize (1900), the
Helmholtz Prize (1901), the Nobel Prize in Physics (1903), and the Barnard
Prize (1905). Henry Becquerel, Nobel Laureate in Radiology, died in France on
August 25, 1908, at the age of 55.
