Today (January 27, 2015) is the Memorial Day of Nobel Laureate Charles Hard Townes, who created the first ammonia maser.
Charles Hard Townes was born on July 28, 1915, in Greenville, South
Carolina. He is of Scottish, English, Welsh, Hujinot French and Scotch Irish
descent. His father, Henry Keith Townes, was a lawyer. His mother is Ellen
Summer Towns. He received a bachelor's degree in physics from Townes Burman
University and a bachelor's degree in modern languages in 1935. Townes
graduated in 1937 with a master's degree in physics from Duke University. He
later received his doctorate in 1939 from the California Institute of
Technology. During World War II, Bell worked on telescope detector blasting
laboratories.
In 1950, Townes was appointed professor at Columbia University. From
1950 to 1952 he served as Managing Director of the Columbia Radiation
Laboratory. He was head of the physics department from 1952 to 1955. In 1953, Townes,
James b. Gordon and Herbert J. He co-founded the first ammonia maser at
Columbia University. Townes was founded in 1941 by Francis H. Schmidt, a social
activist serving the homeless. Married Brown. He is known as one of the most
important experimental physicists of the last century."
He co-won the 1964 Nobel Prize in Physics with Nikolai Pasov and
Alexander Prokhorov. In 1956 he became a permanent member of the National
Academy of Sciences. In 1957 he was appointed a member of the American Academy
of Arts and Sciences. In 1959 he received the Richmire Memorial Award. Townes
was an adviser to the U.S. government from Harry Truman, President of the
Republic in 1945, to Bill Clinton in 1999. Charles Hard Townes, the Nobel
laureate who created the first ammonia mace, passed away on January 27, 2015, in
California at the age of 99.
