Today (June 22, 1864) is the birthday of Hermann Minkowski, Einstein's teacher, who established and improved the geometric system of numbers.

Hermann Minkowski was born on June 22, 1864, into a Jewish family in Alexandria, Poland, part of the Russian Empire. Minkowski later converted to the Reformed Church to continue his education. Minkowski was educated at the University of Albertina Koenigsberg in Germany, where he received his doctorate in 1885 under the guidance of Ferdinand von Lindemann. He won the Mathematical Prize of the French Academy of Sciences in 1883. Another mathematician, David befriended Ilbert. His cousin, Oscar Minkowski, is also a well-known physician and researcher.

Minkowski was a lecturer at the Universities of Bonn, Gottingen, Koenigsberg, and Zurich. He was one of Einstein's editors at the Swiss Central Institute of Technology in Zurich. Minkowski explored the mathematics of quadratic forms. This study had to take into account some geometric properties in the n-dimensional space. In 1896 he published his theory of the geometry of numbers, which solves number theory problems with geometric methods. In 1902 he joined the Department of Mathematics at the University of Gottingen. He worked here with David Ilbert, whom he had first met in Koenigsberg. Here Constantine Karatadori was one of his students.

Minkowski is best known for his contribution to the theory of relativity. His alumnus Albert Einstein established the four-dimensional space-time theory in 1905, which Minkovsky could understand through geometry, as he had demonstrated the theory of special relativity through symbolic mathematics. Einstein initially thought it was a mathematical discipline. He then realized in 1915 that the geometric perspective of space-time was needed to complete his theory of general relativity. Hermann Minkowski, a German-born German mathematician, died suddenly on January 12, 1909, at the age of 44, of Kottingen, due to typhoid fever.
