Today (May 18, 1939) is the birthday of Nobel Prize-winning German physicist Peter Grunberg, who discovered the physics effect of magnetism in the memory of gigabytes of computers.
On May 18, 1939, Peter Grunberg was born in Pilsen, Czech Republic. After
the end of World War I, Peter Kruenberg traveled to the city of Lauttarpahk, in
the district of Hesse, Germany, where he attended a gymnasium in high school,
Germany. Grunberg graduated in 1962 with an intermediate degree from the
University of Wolfgang Coyte. He then joined the University of Darmstadt and
graduated in 1966 with a degree in physics. He was subsequently awarded the
doctoral thesis in 1969. He then studied at Carlton University in Ottawa,
Canada, from 1969-to 1972. In 1986, he found an effect of his study on thin
magnetic fields.
He found that if there were a very thin (~ 1 nanometer) non-ferrous
magnetic film (for example chromium) between the two magnetically oriented
films, the magnetic fluxes on both sides would be in contact with the atomic
magnetosphere. Later, in 1988, he found that the effect of the Great
Magnetosphere (GMR) was to exaggerate this effect through thin films. This is
the same way that gigabytes of magnetic hard drives are used in computers
today. Albert Fert, a French physicist, discovered the phenomenon alone at the
Universite de Paris Sud. They were awarded the 2007 Physics Nobel Prize for
their discovery.
He retired in 2004 after leading the study of the magnetic properties of
the pallid iron membrane, joining one of the best laboratories in Europe, the
Jülich Research Center.
